Finding a puppy can be a long and difficult process. It is so important to buy from a reputable, ethical breeder.

Check the Kennel Club Find a Puppy website

All of these puppies are kennel club registered, and so the breeder will have had checks to ensure their breeding is ethical. Although this can take a while to find the right puppy and there may not be as many as other sites, it is the best way to ensure you buy from a good breeder. Being patient and waiting for the right puppy is worth it.

Ask questions

Asking the breeder questions helps you to quickly distinguish between the ones breeding purely for profit, and the ones who are breeding because of their love of the breed. Ask the breeder if they have had previous litters, is the mother the family pet, do they have previous breeding experience or any canine qualifications? All of these questions will determine what kind of breeder they are. Ask questions about the puppy too – are the vaccinations, flea and wormer up to date, are they vet checked, any health problems? The breeder is also best placed to tell you about the personality of each puppy, so be honest about your lifestyle and what you are looking for in a puppy to make sure the breeder can tell you which puppy out of the litter will be the best match for you.

Research the breed

A quick look on the kennel club site will tell you all there is to know about Pomeranians. There is a huge difference visually between Pomeranians bred within these breed standards, and those which are not. Sometimes, people mistake other breeds such as the German Spitz, to be Pomeranians, and so it is important to know the differences between the breeds. Researching the breed is also important to make sure that a Pomeranian is the right dog for you and that they will fit into your lifestyle. Before getting a Pomeranian puppy, you need to be aware of the exercise and grooming responsibilities you will be undertaking, as well as other traits of Pomeranians – check my blog post on ‘What to know before getting a Pomeranian puppy’ for more information on this.

Go and see the puppies

Once you have found a breeder you are happy with, go and see the puppy to give you an idea of the puppy’s personality, as well as make sure they look healthy. Look at how the puppy interacts with its littermates to determine its personality, as well as how the puppy interacts with the breeder, and yourself. Also make sure you are able to see the mother to check if she looks healthy.

These are just a few tips to help you in the process of finding a Pomeranian puppy which we found useful, and these apply to all breeds. Good luck in your search!
